In 2021 multi-award-winning independent production company Candour Productions, lead a consortium of partners to deliver a Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) Testbeds & Trials project to test 5G in extreme documentary filming locations.

The Live & Wild project was created to explore the possibilities of streaming live content for broadcast and dispatching raw footage from remote and challenging terrains directly back to editing facilities using 5G while at the same time creating short documentaries at each event using and exploring the new found technologies set in different remote environments including rock climbing on the sea cliffs of North Wales, the Helvellyn Triathlon Cumbria,  the underground cave systems of Alum Pot North Yorkshire, Kielder Observatory deep in the International Dark Sky Park and from a Sea Kayak as it makes its way around Holy Island, Northumbia.

Our project partners aql created a bespoke mobile 5G base station which was deployed to the most demanding locations to find out if 5G can be easily integrated into the workflow of filmmaking in these extremely challenging terrains. While safety partners, MTN Safety made sure the project was conducted in the safest way possible.
